Ciao a tutti!

My name is Maria, and I’m from Poland. I’m volunteering in an ESC project at a casa di riposo (nursing home) in Bolzano as a member of the animation team. Mi piace molto!

I decided to join an ESC project a long time ago, but I didn’t expect to work with elderly people. I was looking for a project in a school — I wanted to do activities with young people from different cultures. But when I saw this project, I suddenly realized that I wanted to try something new; something that could become a meaningful experience and give me lifelong knowledge. The most important thing for me is to work with people – age, origin, and background don’t matter.

It’s difficult to describe my first impressions and experiences in just a few sentences. I have this amazing feeling that Bolzano was waiting for me — that everything is ready, smooth, and just right (thank you InCo, Sabrina, everyone!). I’ve met wonderful people with an incredible amount of patience (since I don’t speak Italian, and especially at the beginning everything had to be translated). I’m also learning Italian very quickly! I hope I’ll start speaking soon, and I’m doing my best to make it happen.

So far, I’ve mainly spent my weekdays at work and weekends in the mountains. The nature here in northern Italy is absolutely stunning. It’s still unbelievable to me that I can wake up in the morning and just go hiking or climbing (since I’m originally from a completely flat area). And the Dolomites! ❤️

Working without a shared language is an indescribable experience. I’ve had to learn how to communicate without words — to come up with ideas for how I could interact nonverbally. And suddenly I realized that sometimes words are simply unnecessary. Going for an autumn walk, smelling flowers, holding someone’s hand, receiving and sharing emotions — sometimes that’s enough.

Time is passing so quickly here — I can’t believe it’s already been a month and a half (the weather is still great!). I wish I could stay longer. Next week, together with other volunteers, we’re going to Rome for training and workshops. I’m going to stay a bit longer for sightseeing as well, since it’s my first visit to the Eternal City :)

Mi chiamo Maria e vengo dalla Polonia. Sto facendo volontariato in un progetto ESC in una casa di riposo a Bolzano, come membro del team di animazione. Mi piace molto!

Avevo deciso di partecipare a un progetto ESC già da tempo, ma non mi aspettavo di lavorare con persone anziane. Cercavo un progetto in una scuola — volevo fare attività con giovani di culture diverse. Ma quando ho visto questo progetto, ho capito all’improvviso che volevo provare qualcosa di nuovo — qualcosa che potesse diventare un’esperienza significativa e darmi conoscenze per tutta la vita. La cosa più importante per me è lavorare con le persone — età, origine e background non contano.

È difficile descrivere le mie prime impressioni e esperienze in poche frasi. Ho questa sensazione meravigliosa che Bolzano mi stesse aspettando — che tutto sia pronto, che tutto vada liscio e nel modo giusto (grazie a InCo, Sabrina e a tutti!). Ho conosciuto persone fantastiche con una quantità incredibile di pazienza (dato che non parlo italiano e, soprattutto all’inizio, tutto doveva essere tradotto). Ma sto imparando l’italiano molto velocemente! Spero di iniziare a parlare presto e sto facendo del mio meglio per riuscirci.

Finora ho trascorso principalmente i giorni feriali al lavoro e i fine settimana in montagna. La natura qui, nel nord Italia, è assolutamente meravigliosa. È ancora incredibile per me svegliarmi la mattina e poter andare a fare un’escursione o a scalare (dato che vengo da una zona completamente pianeggiante). E le Dolomiti! ❤️

Lavorare senza una lingua comune è un’esperienza indescrivibile. Ho dovuto imparare a comunicare senza parole — a trovare idee su come interagire in modo non verbale. E all’improvviso ho capito che a volte le parole sono semplicemente inutili. Fare una passeggiata autunnale, annusare i fiori, tenere la mano di qualcuno, ricevere e condividere emozioni — a volte basta questo.

Il tempo qui passa così in fretta — non riesco a credere che sia già passato un mese e mezzo (e il tempo è ancora bellissimo!). Vorrei poter restare più a lungo. La prossima settimana, insieme ad altri volontari, andremo a Roma per una formazione e dei workshop. Resterò un po’ di più per visitare la città, visto che è la mia prima volta nella Città Eterna. :)
